FACT CHECK: Reality behind the viral picture of police attacking protesters in Uttar Pradesh

  • Share

Summary

In our investigation, we found that the viral post claiming that a protestor was attacked by UP police is misleading. The picture was captured when the protestor was trying to run away from the police and in an attempt to do both fell on the street.

In another horrifying incident in Uttar Pradesh, a 23-year-old rape victim was allegedly set ablaze by two accused who lost her life after a battle of almost 40 hours. Following this, protesters were seen out on streets in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

Amid the protest, a picture was widely shared on social media with a claim that police in Uttar Pradesh are attacking the protesters. A journalist named Kanchan Srivastava shared a post on twitter with a caption, " An @INCIndia member being “served” by a woman cop #unnaokibeti protests have further exposed the UP police. CM Yogi Ji himself holds Home."

At the time of writing this article, this post has been shared more than 900 times.

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found out that the woman lying on the ground in the viral picture is Puja Yadav and unlike the claim made in the viral post, she is associated with the Samajwadi Party, not with Indian National Congress.

We can see the picture of Akhilesh Yadav in her profile. She has also pinned a video of the same incident in her profile.

We also found a video of the same protest which surfaced on social media, showing the reality behind the viral post. You can see the complete video down below.

In the complete video of the protest, we can see a protestor running towards the police and then running away. While she was running away, one of the female cops tried to hold her and the voice of a man can be heard from the background asking her to run away as he was recording the video.

After 18 seconds in the video, the protestor starts chanting 'Akhilesh Yadav Zindabad' and in an attempt to run away, the protestor and the cop both fell on the street, the moment when the viral picture was captured. The protestor then gets up and runs away.

The whole act appears to be enacted. In twitter her profile, Puja Yadav has pinned a cropped 9-second-version of the same video.

You can watch the video down below.

Clearly, the claim made with the viral post that a protestor was attacked by UP police is false. The picture is being shared with a misleading claim as it was captured when the protestor was trying to run away from the police and in an attempt to do so both fell on the street.
